Patient: A.Jagannatham
Residence: Malakpet, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
Residence: Malakpet, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
Age: Mid 50’s.
He was admitted with damaged liver in April, 2003 in global hospital. Doctors advised liver transplantation. His wife, Prameela, volunteered the liver. The operation was conducted with the large right half of the liver taken away from Prameela and transplanted in the body of Jagannatham.
Tragedy:
2 days after the surgery, donor Prameela suffered heart attack and went into coma. And 15 days later, her husband died of sepsis (infection). Prameela never came out of coma to see him die. Prameela died on January 9, 2007 after lying comatose for 44 months.
The family filed a police complaint charging the hospital with the negligence and filed a compensation claim with the consumer court. A ruling is still awaited.
In the mean time, Hospital slapped Rs.44 lakh claim on the family as charges for failed operation and other services. The family already spent up Rs.10 lakh to the hospital expenses.
Because of medico legal formalities, Prameela body was not handed over to her sons, but taken for post mortem.

His son says: “They said my mother would be normal in five weeks that my father would recover in six weeks. The doctors have to date not told us exactly why my mother suffered a heart attack”.

Dr. K.Ravindranath, MD of the hospital, said:”We are not gods. We did every thing we could. The surgery was successful; his liver was functioning well enough. Sepsis affects 20% transplant patients. The drugs we gave also numb the immune system further. If not for our efforts, Prameela would not have lived so long”.
Please comment on this medical case. It happened in our hi-tech Hyderabad city.

It is really sad! The so called corporate hospitals in the city are turning so commercial that it is scary even to visit them as an out patient. Who doesn't know about a notorious 'caring' hospital in town which provides a legal and offical hideout for celebreties who occassionally turn into shooting stars!
This is pathetic to say the least.
Dear Dr. Krishna
What you write about is commonplace, in most commercial hospitals, who have become like slaughterhouses where one goes to be ripped off and die. See my comment on Escorts Hospital(now Fortis Escorts) in Delhi. I have a ferverent prayer for all Indians that they should never suffer the indignity to spend their last days in a hospital. Thankfully being wiser after my fathers demise 2 years back, I was able to take a better decision in my 74 year old fathers-in-laws case after he was diagnosed with lever cancer in the right lobe. We were also told by a leading surgeon in Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, to immediately find a donor and deposit 20 lakhs for surgery. They were also promising 4 weeks recovery for the patient and 2 weeks for the donor. We examined all possibilities and explored throughly before finally coming to a correct decision that surgery was very risky at this age further due to Hepatitis B complications. Chemoembolization procedure was successfuly performed twice by Dr. Pradeep Mule of Batra Hospital, and my father in law is well on the path of definite improvement. While there is no particular cure for cancer alternative's like the above are much safer and lead to a better quality of life for the patient. There is however very little medical ethics in hospitals or surgeons who earn obscene amounts of money at the cost of human misery. I would like to appeal to Doctors with a social conscience wherever they are to form a pressure group and fight for ethical norms, transparency and better quality of medical care. There is a great need for a more comprehensive legislation by parliament to stop crimnalisation of the medical practice in India. Also there is crying need for comprehensive medical support/insurance for the common Indian citizen and something like the British Health Service must be emulated. I would like to start a debate on this subject. My e-mail is vivekvir@gmail.com
Thank you vivek for sharing another medical case. Doctors -patient relationship is replaced by
Consumer-business man relationship.

Srinivas and Uday are fighting a battle they lost even before it began. In April 2003, when their father had a liver failure, doctors suggested their healthy 52-year-old mother could donate a part of her liver to save him.

Liver donor dies in city hospital
Hindu, India - 14 hours ago
HYDERABAD: A. Prameela, a 60-year-old woman, who donated a part of her liver for liver transplantation of her husband four years ago, died on Tuesday at ...
NHSexposed.com in their mail.
The BBC currently hides the films of the actual operation done on these two patients (donor and recipient).
Dr Nigel Heaton and his team (http://www.cromwell-hospital.co.uk/htmlpages/consultants.asp?ID=162) were responsible for the disastrous consequences of these two patients. Of course, we all know what this was about - the elite British Medical Profession finding people to experiment to perfect their technique for the UK - who better to choose than Indians with a desperate search for a miracle ?. Afterall, if the operation went wrong who would hold Mr Heaton accountable? No-one. Money no doubt exchanged hands. Kings College have failed to answer the family's questions hoping those in middleclass India will not have the means to fight. At the time of the operation, we wish to ask whether or not the NHS funded this form of operation or not?
It should be noted that Professor Graeme Catto is based at Kings College London. The GMC screened out this complaint and refused the family access to their own medical records thereby "protecting their own" and having no respect for the family and the tragedy that has befallen them. The flaws in their screening process is unforgivable. Jackie Smith of course was responsible for the events at the GMC. They are of course doing their part to protect the British establishments interests. Kings College Transplant Team failed to reply to the General Medical Council. Their screeners in their wisdom failed to take into account the specialised subject, failed to research it properly and conveniently threw the case out.
Our condolences go to the family. Prameela was the noblest of ladies - a woman who died in an attempt save her husband. The ultimate sacrifice in the name of marriage and more importantly - love for her husband. Like many women in India, she trusted the British doctors looking for the miracle they had promised. Amongst the contempt with which the British authorities have treated this family, Prameela will remain in peace, far from the immense amount of suffering that has been caused to her by doctors who simply did not care - Global Hospitals India, Dr Nigel Heaton who hides from them at Kings College Hospital London.

Liver donor's two dates with death-Delhi-Cities-NEWS-The Times of India ...
NEW DELHI: The case of the dead liver donor just got murkier. According to the Indraprastha ... This is only the second known liver donor death in India. ...
What ever a Doctor say is always right. They never accept there faults. In corporate hospitals. every thing is corporate. Except the treatment. Medical profession used to be very noble profession. Now corporate hospitals are like brothel houses and doctors are like pimps.
Careless banjara, hospital is always famous for the wrong reasons. They couldnt provide oxygen to a patient in ICU for 15 minutes. The negligence case was slapped and court order to pay 5 lakhs. Not a big amount for so called corporate hospitals. But its a lesson for them. Dont play with precious lifes. Dr Patient relationship changed to Client and Businessman.Very sad
It is really unfortunate that corporate hospitals are run by Money hungry scanvengers. Ravindra Reddy is purely a money minded person with out any service orientation. He was working in Appollo and was popular for his experiments with patients. The knowledge of his doctors is questionable who think of only thier area and not the patient as a whole. With his clout with police and govt he gets out easily.
I would suggest we should have a Hyderabad website which exposes the madical misdemeanors... I have lost my dear one's in Global hospital too with sheer neglignece of hospital. The are very slow in attending to patient who are critical. Thier working culture is not at par with the bills they put on people. I wish there was a good mechanism like in US to identify the wrong doings of these so called corporate hospitals
Regards
Anil
